This photograph, “f/olding” is one of multiple images I took in Singapore in 2019 photographing dancers in Theo Clinkard’s work “Now Map”for LASALLE College of the Arts. The images were shaped into a film as an assemblage within a reconstructed iteration of the piece I curatedand directed.
The image was also chosen for the cover of a book I co-authored/edited with Dr Glenna Batson released by Intellect in 2025 titled “artmakingas embodied enquiry -entering the f/old”. * The image hones in on the expansive multiplicity inherent in the book, which illuminates on ourshared research, the f/old as somatic\artistic practice. Stimulated by Deleuze’s concept of the fold, paraphrasing: the smallest unit of matter isnot the point, but the fold, we explore the fold’s ability of infinite depth and patterning, tipping at thresholds. Through a somatized lens, thepraxis is tethered to the body, able to challenge any/all default artmaking.
“f/olding” is an image that yields a multiplicity of readings, by nature of its foldings. A fragment of the dancer in movement is captured, hertransparent organza overgarment morphs as a second skin/membranes, the folds becoming organs. Inner as outer, outer as inner, ashapeshifting continuum.
