This photograph, “hanging f/olds” is a composite of 2 images, both within a book I co-authored/edited with Dr Glenna Batson released by Intellect in 2025 titled “artmaking as embodied enquiry – entering the f/old.” * The combined images hone the expansive multiplicity inherent inthe book, which illuminates on our shared research, the f/old as somatic\artistic practice. Stimulated by Deleuze’s concept of the fold, paraphrasing: the smallest unit of matter is not the point, but the fold, we explore the fold’s ability of infinite depth and patterning, tipping thresholds. Through a somatized lens, the praxis is tethered to the body, able to challenge any/all default artmaking.
“hanging f/olds” is of 2 images, one of dancer Valerie Lim in a folded bodily state, the photograph shifted to maximum exposure. The second image, a hanging mosquito net from Tioman Island in Malaysia. Here the folds, against the black are illuminated as well. Both images suspended in a non-gravitational shaping, illuminating the f/old’s capacity to support infinite configurations, multiple formations. From our book: “Rather than standing as static perceptual vantage points, they bring us beyond the binary into the in-between, that nebulous cloud of ambiguity, a gestational realm of embodiment, enmeshment and entanglement.” (pp 86).
