Juan Sebastian, a Colombian photographer living and working in Miami, draws much of his practice from the “modern tradition of magical realism” shaped by authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende. His work studies the human form as something both fragile and mutable, often deconstructing and then reconstructing bodies to freeze gestures that reveal the delicate interplay between interior transformation and external change. This approach, rooted in the intertwining of myth and realism, provides the lens through which his images emerge. Skirting the liminal boundaries of dreams and the subconscious, Sebastian’s imagery engages the often-controversial themes of heritage, sexuality, and taboo. By a portraiture that is more performative than revealing of identity, Sebastian maintains an ambiguity that challenges preconceptions of selfhood, gender, and narrative.

Sebastian was represented in SCOPE art fair in Miami with Galeria Subtitulo in 2023 and 2024, and in 2025 his work, Susurros del Abismo II with Galeria Subtitulo was selected for As it Unfolds, curated by Fitsum Shebeshe for the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA). In 2024, his work was selected for Pantheon, at Minnie Park Art Project, New York, NY.
