Untitled #8 explores ideas around determinism and chaos in relation to the heat death of the universe. It does this through layered and repeated frequencies, birdsong and the image of fireweed. The heat death of the universe is a state in which the universe reaches maximum entropy, where energy is fully dispersed and all systems move towards total equilibrium.
Hz is used instead of more familiar sounding instruments to minimise sound in a literal sense rather than volume, to reflect the ideas of the beginningelements of the universe, previous to now. The sound moves through audible space, appearing, dissolving and reappearing, while layering upon itself and echoing the way atoms and particles interact through probabilistic processes.
Birdsong introduces elements of chance, present but constantly shifting, while also creating an encompassing experience. The layered colours on fireweed reflect the concepts within the work. Flowers themselves are deterministic, but chance is introduced through their environments and weather. Fireweed is known by its name as it rapidly grows across charred land, similarly to the expanse of the universe.
This work meditates upon being here now and the coming unifying heat death, it being a temporary concentrated moment within this entropic universe.
